Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the burden and social support felt by the family caregivers of mentally ill patients. The relationship and also their relative factors influencial to the degree of burden and social support were investigated to
provide basic data for the family's mental health states which may lead to better nursing strategies.
Questionnaires were distrubuted to caregiving family members of their patients. Patients were either being treated in psyciatric ward in one of the 4 general hospitals located in Seoul, or in 2 mental hospitals in Kyng-gi do, including both
instituted
and out-patients. Beginning from Oct. 18th, 1994 to Nov. 17th in the same year, a total of 30 days were spent on distributing and collecting the questionnaires which dealt with family caregivers' burden and social supports. The questionnaires
designed
and used by workers, place their basis in tools such as Subjective & Objective Burden Measurment develped by Montgomery et. al(1985) and Social Support Measurment developed by Brandt and Weinert(1980).
@ES Results are as follows.
@EN 1. Burden felt by the family members, when evaluated as numbers between 1 (low) through 5(high), shows an average value of 2.83.
2. Of the family characteristics, patient-caregivers relationship and patient's condition perceived by caregivers significantly affect the burden felt by the family caregaivers. Of the patient characteristics, patient's age, marriage, and
occupations
before afflication effect the amount of burden felt.
3. Social support of the patient family members, when evaluated as numbers between 1(low) through 5 (high), shows an average value of 3.55.
4. Of the family characteristics, patient's condition perceived by family caregivers significantly affect the social support felt.
5. The relationship between burden and social support felt by the family members is not statistically significant.
In conclusion to the above study, the author suggests that in order to measure the degree of burden and the social support perceived by mentally ill patient's family caregivers, more reliable tools designed especially to meet Korean situations
are
in
much need. Influencial factors that are social as well as factors that are cultural should also be studied further.
